Detail
According to the responses to the information requests, the Ministry of Economy, the Secretariat of Transport and the National Directorate of National Motor Vehicle and Pledge Credit Registries do not have consolidated data that would make it possible to measure the share of electric vehicles in the vehicle fleet in circulation.
According to private estimates (AFAC/SIOMAA), by the end of 2024 Argentina had a total vehicle fleet of approximately 15,552,418 vehicles, of which only 1,555 were battery electric vehicles and around 46,000 were hybrids. Battery electric vehicles therefore represented less than 0.1% of the total, while hybrids accounted for 0.3%. Sales of electrified vehicles, including electric, hybrid and mild-hybrid vehicles, reached 12,335 units in the first half of 2025, but only 4% were battery electric vehicles and 2% were plug-in hybrids. Year-on-year sales growth reached 56%, although it was concentrated in hybrid technologies rather than fully electric vehicles.
In 2025, measures were implemented to reduce import barriers: Decree No. 49/2025 eliminated import tariffs on electric and hybrid vehicles for five years, subject to annual quotas; Resolution No. 210/2025 authorised the import of up to 50,000 vehicles with alternative powertrains and an FOB value below USD 16,000; and Administrative Provision No. 30/2025 launched the first call for quota allocation in March 2025. Although these measures may increase availability and reduce costs, there is still no evidence of their actual impact on the market, nor are updated official data available to assess progress towards the 2% target for 2030.
