Detail
The project “Increasing Health-Sector Capacities and Strengthening Coordination on Climate Action in Argentina at the National and Subnational Levels” (Green Climate Fund Readiness Project, 2022–2024) estimated that the health system accounts for 2.07% (7,680 GgCO₂e) of the national total reported in Argentina’s Fourth Biennial Update Report (370,159.72 GgCO₂e).
In addition, the First Progress Report on the Implementation of the Second National Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Plan indicates that an initial estimate of greenhouse gas emissions from the health sector was conducted through the implementation of the ICAT Argentina initiative. The Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) study for Argentina entitled “Determination of the GHG Emissions Profile and Comparison with the ICAT Health I Experience under the ICAT Argentina Project”, published in December 2024, assesses emissions from 73 healthcare facilities of different types across the country in order to estimate emissions from the sector as a whole at the national level, with wide margins of uncertainty.
Although progress has been made, there is no systematic and progressive measurement of the carbon footprint at healthcare-facility level, no integrated national baseline has been established, no public reporting is available in the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory, and no additional progress has been recorded over the past year. The assigned category is therefore “Early progress”.
