According to the National Parks Administration’s response to the information request and the first National Glacier Inventory, the National System of Protected Areas contains 2,120 glacial landforms covering a total of 310,963 hectares, equivalent to approximately 37% of the glacier area identified in the country (8,484 km²).

To move towards the 90% target by 2030, provincial protected areas will need to be incorporated alongside national protected areas, and the boundaries of existing areas will need to be adjusted to include glaciers and periglacial environments. The spatial analysis conducted shows that some provinces, such as Santa Cruz, have a high proportion of their glaciers within protected areas, while others, including San Juan and Mendoza, have lower levels of coverage.

At the national level, the 90% target has not yet been achieved. The assigned category is therefore “Moderate progress”, and stronger interjurisdictional cooperation will be required to meet the target by 2030.
