Detail

According to the National Parks Administration’s response to the information request, achievement of the 30% conservation target by 2030 will require joint action by this authority, subnational systems and other effective area-based conservation measures, and is not the sole responsibility of the National Parks Administration. At present, the representation of Argentina’s ecoregions within the Federal System of Protected Areas (SiFAP) exceeds 30% in several ecoregions, including the Paraná Delta and Islands, Patagonian Forests, High Andes, Puna and Iberá Wetlands, and is close to 30% in the Yungas Forests and Atlantic Forest. However, other ecoregions have considerably lower levels of protection, including the Monte of Plains and Plateaus (7.2%), Pampas (4.6%), Humid Chaco (4.33%) and Espinal (1.23%), among others.

The total protected area registered under SiFAP accounts for 12.12% of the national territory, while areas under the National Parks Administration account for 4.13%. Progress is therefore limited, and substantial efforts will be required to achieve the 30% target by 2030, particularly in the least represented ecoregions.
