Detail
The most recent protected natural areas were established in 2023:
Law No. 27,707 created Laguna El Palmar National Park and National Reserve.
Decree No. 337/2023 created Cerro Pistarini Nature Reserve.
Decree No. 123/2023 created Marismas del Tuyú Nature Reserve.
In addition, according to the official information provided by the National Parks Administration (APN), between 2021 and 2024 the National System of Protected Areas (SNAP) expanded by 695,224 hectares. This included the creation of six new protected areas—Ansenuza National Park and National Reserve; Campo San Juan Federal Park Strict Nature Reserve; Cerro Pistarini Educational Nature Reserve; Islote Lobos National Park and National Reserve; Laguna El Palmar National Park and National Reserve; and Marismas del Tuyú Strict Nature Reserve—covering a total of 692,117 hectares, as well as the expansion of two protected areas, Aconquija and Pre-Delta, by 17,252 hectares.
As a result, the area protected under the National Parks Administration increased from 4,649,601 hectares in 2021 to 5,387,260 hectares in 2024, representing growth of 16%. Although this increase is significant, it falls short of the 20% target. The assigned category is therefore “Impossible to achieve”.
