Detail
In 2016, emissions from the electricity sector amounted to 46.9 MtCO₂e. By 2024, they had fallen to 33.6 MtCO₂e, representing an average annual decline of 4%, driven by the increased share of renewable energy and the substitution of liquid fuels with natural gas. Available evidence suggests that this trend will continue in the coming years. This improvement can also be seen in the reduction in emissions intensity per unit of electricity generated, which fell from 0.343 tCO₂/MWh in 2016 to 0.236 tCO₂/MWh in 2024. If the recent rate of decline is maintained, the target of 26.3 MtCO₂e would be reached by 2030.
However, a rebound in electricity demand resulting from economic recovery could increase the use of fossil fuels. In addition, limited electricity transmission capacity poses a risk that could constrain the integration of renewable energy and delay achievement of the objective.
